FROM NOTHING TO A MERCHANT PLACE

There is not much information about Nusfjord before 1800, but from the information we can find in different tax lists and man counts we discover that there have been two families living here since long ago. In 1567 there are mentioned two tax rolls, Gregorius and Gudmund in Nusfjord.
Nusfjord was owned by the Norwegian King, like most places in Lofoten were. The state sold Nusfjord parted in 1823 and 1843.
The first documented merchant in Nusfjord was Lorentz Christopher Sverdrup from Sund, a fishing-town west of Nusfjord. In 1813 it was registered that he owned a small country-store in Nusfjord.
Jens Losius bought the first part of Nusfjord in 1823. He was married to Maren Marie Johannesdatter. After ten years of marriage, 7.may 1833, he was lost at sea. He was never found again. After just one year Maren married again. 15.june 1834 she married Hans Grøn Dahl.
